Wow. This book has such beautiful writing and is able to tell a really important and heartwrenching story about immigration, racism, cuban history, addiction and multiple generational-trauma. And in only about 200 words.

A novel about several generations of cuban and cuban American women. The last woman, Jeanette is a drug addict and in the end overdoses. At one point in her life she takes care of her neighbors child who was deported by ice. She does turn in the girl though and she is also deported. At the end of the book the girl finds her way back and finds that Jeannette is dead. Her mother Carmen takes care of her.

Stories of women and family woven across time and countries. I was engrossed in the book but feel as if I need to know more.

I really wanted to love Of Women and Salt, and at times I did. The narrative was a cool idea and I loved that it was female-centric. Overall, it felt rushed to me. We didn’t spend enough time with any of the characters to really feel connected with them, and I felt there was so much more to explore had the book been a little longer. How the two female lines came together was a nice touch, but I wanted to know more about these women and their lives. I know the format and style of this book doesn’t lend itself to that, and that probably was intentional, but I just thought it would work so well as a longer piece.

The book itself was well written and I would love to read more by the author.
