Honestly, this is a 3.5 ⭐️ for me.

I enjoyed the book and I don’t want to put a damper on the series but it was just such a let down compared to the first two. There was tension and yes the scene with them fleeing Vesuvius were gripping. But it felt rushed in some ways and slow in others.

Also, now that I finished it, it sort of feels like nothing happened. They just wrapped up everything instead of furthering plots. Even the eruption was just plot for the. To have a happily ever after. Idk. Overall I enjoyed it, but this is definitely the weakest in the series.

I’m even disappointed how things ended with Felix. And not reuniting with Britannica? Why not just wrap that up too? Idk man.

What an end to my favourite book series! I had been avoiding reading this book because I didn’t want to series to end! But alas, now it does!

The first act of the book was mired by imperial politics, which the previous two books did not have. I did find this to be a bit slow to get into (though I am a fan of Roman history, I love these books for Amara’s human story than the political history here), but the book picks up in the last two acts. A near 4.5* review from me but I had to deduct due to that first act.

I also love how the eruption of point Vesuvius is just looking in the background of the book and it does add to some tension and anxiety as you’re reading that all of these politics Amara gets involved with is menial compared to the natural disaster that is about to take place. When it does erupt, I was devouring the book, and had so many emotions for the main characters.

i just wanted everyone to survive!!! But Julia’s death was so upsetting and also the description of so many ‘missing’ and presumed dead characters. I was really happy to see Menander survive (they can never make me hate you; I will always love you for being Amara’s first love), and the epilogue with Britannica!!! I can’t even describe how relieved I was that she was alive in the end, and that it was implied Amara would find her.

Overall, a perfect ending to this epic trilogy. I’m sad I have leave Amara and other characters behind, but I’m so happy the way the series ended!
