Read for book club. Really liked the story, kinda dragged in the middle but liked the twist at the end. Wish I knew more about Spanish history

While I enjoyed the book, three main complaints poisoned much of the wonderful adventure. This is very close to 4/5, but by the end I felt 3/5 was most appropriate.
1.) The women characters were useless and almost entirely used for romance-based plot development. They always felt like they were *almost* three dimensional, but would then be reduced down to their romantic subplots.
2.) The book had humerous parts but was very dark. While I think a neutral or even happy ending would have been fine, this ending felt like a 'where are they now' type ending that took away from the rest of the book.
3.) It seemed that Don Federico's ending was too rushed, not making clear the author's intent. In its present state it reads as though he is straight-washed.
I'd still recommend it if it's your kind of genre, but it isn't the champion I'd expected.
