Probably my favourite part of the main story. Salamander is the best character and really balances out Jill and Rhodry's dynamic well. Also enjoy that what happened to Jill in this book is taken seriously by those around her.
Graphic: Rape, Sexism, Sexual assault, Kidnapping

In this installment of the Deverry novels, we have two unfinished tales--the ongoing "current" story of Nevyn, Rhodry, and Jill and a new story of an earlier reincarnation of the souls of Galrion, Blaen, and Brangwen as Necyn, Maddyn, and Branoic. This book rolls right along, with intriguing characters around our main protagonists and plenty of plot twists. I will be diving into the final book in this arc of the Deverry books soon.
Awesome book.
The plot thickens with the dark-Hawks succeeding in their plans to separate Rhodry and Jill, and set the stage for instability in Deverry. This is a wonderfully easy book to read - devoured in a day! It finishes in a real cliffhanger where Nevyn's plans are in shambles and desperate to rescue Rhodry from whatever fate is in stall for him.

I was super into the third Deverry book for the first chunk--the more modern storyline is interesting, and the flashback storyline finds Nevyn doing some interesting political stuff to bring peace to their war-torn country--but then comes a lengthy interlude where we meet a guy who can charm horses, and you're like, this is so cute, and then it turns out he can ALSO charm WOMEN, and brainwashes the main girl into running away with him and basically he makes her a sex slave. Now, to be fair to the book, this is treated as VERY WRONG AND BAD, it is definitely called rape, but it is still really stressful to read! And the rest of the book is no less stressful after that. I also had a little bit of a hard time remembering who all of the tertiary characters were but that wasn’t a huge deal. I dunno, B?

The previous reincarnation in this story was the most disappointing part. Which usually, that's my favorite part of the story. It just abruptly ends without even really finishing up the storyline. The Jill/Rhodry present-day story line redeemed the disappointment of the reincarnation element.
While sometimes confusing, jumping time periods, it's a very interesting story. I found myself smiling grimly at the end of this chair of the series. While it was great news, it was bittersweet.
