I was skeptical when I started reading about some of the musical references, but I ended up quite enjoying this sweet, reflective story. Prudence and Alexei are both such complicated, endearing characters whose stories intertwine to create a lovely narrative about the nature of dreams, artistry, and purpose. This book has some thoughtful rumination about music and musicians, talent and hard work, and finding strength within yourself. The writing has a drollness to it that really brings this quirky story to life and makes these characters come to life. At times, I found the characters’ actions and lack of communication frustrating and unrealistic, but it generally served the furthering of the plot, and there were other aspects of the characters’ interactions that I found refreshing compared to what I expected (Prudence & Stuart’s relationship especially). This book wasn’t what I expected, but I ended up enjoying it. For fans of Where’d You Go, Bernadette?, Miss Benson’s Beetle, Jonas Jonasson’s books, etc.
Graphic: Emotional abuse, Child abuse, and Physical abuse
Moderate: Grief, Injury/Injury detail, and Stalking
