A short little mystery with just a bit of suspense. I doubt I'll read more of this series. She's not a great writer, just okay.

I was thoroughly enjoying this but the last few pages completely undercut some of the protagonist's character development. Throughout the book, Ruth is shown to be a woman who values her independence, who doesn't mind being on her own. She is satisfied in her professional life.

Yes, she has insecurities: her weight is mentioned far too many times (I weigh just a liitle more than Ruth and have never once worried about setting off a car's sensors), and her mentor and colleagues don't always value her contributions in ways that make her momentarily question herself.  She does contemplate whether she should want more, but always comes back to being satisfied with the home she has made and the decisions that brought her there.
Her ex re-enters her life, yet she is firm in her convictions that she doesn't love him and it would be wrong to restart a relationship.

Yet, despite all of this evidence established again and again throughout the book,
the story ends with her pleasantly surprised at being pregnant. Ugh! Women can be maternal without being mothers! I was so happy to find a book with a well-established, single woman who was mostly satisfied with her life, but no, the lesson once again seems to be that women aren't complete unless they embrace the role of motherhood.
The ending was enough to turn me off from the rest of the series.

Recommended by a co-worker, I really enjoyed this murder mystery set in remote Norfolk England. The main character, Ruth Galloway, is a forensic archeologist. This is the first in a series, and I will definitely continue with it.
