Very predictable plot, but i had fun reading it, i liked Ruth's character, but the parts about her weight were unnecessary, i liked the parts about the archeological finds, even tought i doubt you could just take a part of a iron age burial home with you to look at.
I liked it even tough it was very clear to me at the startwho kidnapped the girls, and also that the cat died.

Love the character of Ruth Galloway. I look forward to more of her adventures. Not sure why some of her colleagues got away with misleading the police, or why she continued to befriend them, but I'll go with it because I like Ruth.

An easy read, but the main character Ruth's constant reference to her weight was off putting and unnecessary, it didn't serve the story at all. Also convenient to kill off the murderer so not to explain motive in any clever way Ruth pregant at the end - who is the father?!

Elaine ( and Emily) you were right. This IS a good book. Ruth is a great character, and Nelson is a Jackson Brodie.
I feel the same whenever I read crime, a bit let down at the end, a bit deflated. I think because the whole structure is hurtling towards a climax, you really need a shuddering climax... And did this deliver? I dunno..if it was General Fiction I wouldn't be asking would I?
This is well written, good characters but ultimately the plot got in the way of what could have been a story about an Archaeologist and a Policeman and some great scenery.

What a very silly story. Totally predictable and terrible prose. I won't be bothering with the rest of this series.
I agree with many other reviewers that this was just a bit clunky in style and would have been much more readable if it hadn't been written in the present tense. It's a shame because there was much to enjoy; I like the main characters Ruth and Nelson, and the setting was brilliantly evoked. The author had clearly done her research and the story was interesting. I might even try the next one in the series to see if they improve? Maybe.
