3.5/5 - good plot, surprising twist, overly meh
Took me awhile to get through this book which was due to the fact that the Malec portrayed in this book is so different than the Malec that we already know from all the other short stories and the more recent books, so reading them at this stage in their relationship was so weird and not that enjoyable. I think I would've enjoyed this book more if I had read it after City of Glass.
Plot was kinda good. First book in the series that dealt with a cult, which was cool. I was really surprised by Shinyen though. I really thought she was a good person and I did not know about her true motives until it was too late. I always believe the good in characters, sigh. And when Alec let her leave, I honestly thought that she would disappear and live a quiet and fulfilling life but nope! I guess she kidnapped Ragnor Fell so we'll have to see where that leads us. Sigh.
I really liked all the small cameos in this book! Seeing Tessa was sweet and Alec asking if Magnus was ever with her was cute. One of my favourites was seeing Helen and Aline meet for the first time and becoming friendly and cute was so nice to read! We've never gotten to see Helen or Aline fight so viciously against demons, and seeing that side of them definitely added more to their characters. Seeing Raphael was nice too and so sad when he kept texting Ragnor Fell who is supposedly dead. But I think I'm only saying this because I read a short story about them becoming friends, and to other people who have not read this short story, this part of the book might not be that significant to them but to me, it was.
Again, Cassie puts a lot of easter eggs in this book like all the foreshadowing stuff which I only get since I read all her other books so I guess it's nice to be able to pick out these easter eggs.
Would I read this book again? Probably not. Malec without their kids is just not... the same. I would prefer a story in the more recent timeline with their kids making a cameo which I know we'll see in the next book so I can't wait to read it!

recommended by a student; decent YA with star-crossed lovers, father-son issues, and typical Hallmark movie corny moments like postponing romance to save the world and the end of the world interrupting the couple’s vacation. Enjoyed the European locations, multicultural characters, and epigraphs to Byron, Shakespeare, and Schopenhauer. I do find the initial epigraph most interesting: “To desire immortality is to desire the eternal perpetuation of a great mistake. - Schopenhauer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0zmfNx7OM4)
“I’m not shy,” the boy sneered. “I just hate everyone around me and everything that is happening” (139).
“He felt refreshed and his mission was clear: wrap up this cult business, return to romantic vacation” (210).
“if only the world were a fairy tale, Nephilim” (297)
“You’re totally right . . . This is not the time for love. This is the time for leaving immediately” (315).

It's okay! The book goes by really quickly but I just didn't resonate with it as much as I wanted.
