This as a children's book is a little hard to believe as the message is a little dark and creepy.
HOWEVER, the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. I feel like this is just a children's book but really for adults. 10/10 do not recommend reading to your children as they will probably have nightmares.
I am a bit biased because I am obsessed with dragons and George RR Martin.
3.5/5 Stars

The Ice Dragon is a nice companion story to the standard Song of Ice and Fire world. First published as a short story in a compendium titled Dragons of Light, this 1980′s tale was given a new treatment in the 2006 Tor rerelease.
Featuring illustrations by Yvonne Gilbert, The Ice Dragon is the story of a young girl born in the winter of the cold north. She is emotionless and awkward. Her skin is as cold as her personality. She is very reminiscent of a wight from the core series, but alive and obviously human. She is frequently and secretly visited by an ice dragon, whose breath can freeze and kill in seconds, and who cannot be tamed or touched by humans.. Except for her.
Martin fans should take thirty minutes out to read this. It occurs in the years before the ice and fire series, and there is no mention of the ruling families or even of a wall to the north.. So how far in the past I couldn’t say, but far enough that there are armies of dragon riders in the war.
I would be curious after reading this how the wights fit in, are all of them truly undead or are they (similar to cold hands) something else, perhaps joyless emotionless humans like the girl in this tale.
I digress into theory though. This was excellent. Good for adults or children alike.

This book was awesome! It is a great introduction to fantasy for young readers. It is from the perspective of a young girl so the narrative is just vague about violence and does not describe anything to explicitly (with the exception of one specific instance). This book could either make a good read aloud with a younger child or a first fantasy for a middle grade reader. Even as an adult the narrative is satisfying because there is just enough implication about what is occurring outside the child narrator's understanding.
we love a cute little book to dream about reading to our future children before bed
The Ice Dragon is a short children's story that predates Martin's Song of Ice and Fire by 16 years. He claims that the worlds are not the same, since The World of Ice and Fire didn't exist when he wrote this story - but one familiar with Westeros can definitely see it's precursor in this story.
I purchased a copy with illustrations by Luis Royo and they really bring the story to life.
