What a lovely children's book. I hope to read it to my children one day. Then when they're a bit bigger they can make a start on ASOIAF :D
Beautiful illustrations!

A cute, sad and poetic short-story, very faithful with the traditional fairytale outline. I enjoyed it.
Such a cute story set in the SOIAF world. Martin did not disappoint with this children's book. Fast read, great story, amazing illustrations and all done in 120 pages.
A nice little book featuring a fairy tale that may or may not be set in the universe of A Song of Ice and Fire. It's about a girl with a strange love of the winter season, who spots an ice dragon everytime the world becomes cold again. However, there's also a war going on where her family is wrapped up in, which causes a great deal of sadness.
It's an endearing tale, beautifully illustrated.

Listened to this with no expectations, but it turned out to be a perfect little story for the season (mostly, it took darker turns than I initially expected and honestly would have liked).
I thought after reading 500+ pages of King's short stories, I'd break things up with a couple of shorter books. After my short, non-fiction Adichie read, a children's story set in Westeros by George R.R. Martin seemed PERFECT. The setting of many years before the 'A Song Of Ice & Fire' series is placed is clear, as a bulk of the King's army has actual dragons to fly on. I liked that while there were many references to Westerosi culture and history, the main focus was the story itself, which was in essence a Fairy Tale of sorts. It reminded me of a bloodier take on 'The Snow Child' that involves a dragon made of ice instead. Martin really toned down the adult themes in this one, but in a way, his distinct style was ever-present and I loved that too.
I didn't get as into this as I have some children's books in the past, and I felt that this was due to the vague nature of the story. I missed Martin's attention to detail in this and I felt like it could have benefited from being a little longer so that the jumps in time were smoother. The characters were also very underdeveloped too. In short, while I enjoyed this read, I think Martin does a lot better in his adult Fantasies where he can spend more time and energy in the development of everything. This was a great story though and I look forward to branching out into more of Martin's works set in Westeros that aren't from his main series.
4 Stars.

definitely a young adult book, with an emphasis on young. Doesn't really enhance the adult series any. Just a nice short diversion.
