This is definitely out of my reading zone but was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this, a western with a supernatural twist, it at first seems full of the trope of the genre but it is kind of turned on its head. Very clever. There is one scene that utterly destroyed me about 250 pages in. Devestated.

The book is pretty fast paced and easy to read. Wildly entertaining.

I am planning on rereading this book to give a more accurate review on my thoughts, but it didn’t feel right to have it at my previous score (4.5) when my actual feelings were a bit more “meh.”
A summary of what I recall were things I didn’t like:
  • Apostle’s actions and personality felt inconsistent
  • I felt Almena was a bit too. Unproblematic? Like it was way too easy for Apostle to be ok with her criminality because of details
  • The romance didn’t feel like it naturally developed: to me, it was as if one moment they were this awkward frienemies and the next “oh they’re lovers now I guess” but it could definitely just be me.
  • The integration of diversity felt a little “let me point out to you how much the west actually sucked.” I felt maybe it could have been more naturally integrated (I will admit I don’t know what that would look like though). Part of it might be because the pointing of out was done by a white woman which seemed a little “hm” to me. I did appreciate the enby Asian character, though. Like, literally me.
I did like how Almena’s ability worked. Can’t really remember what I liked, unfortunately so uh. Look forward to that from my reread review?
