There were some interesting ideas and concepts, but I didn't think they were fully fleshed out. What I thought would've made the most interesting story was only mentioned twice, and I wanted more of it. It also seemed to be missing a central conflict- to me it felt like three or four small conflicts strung together with no real big payoff.

Loved how the author handled difficult topics with care, including race relations and gender fluidity. A western for modern times!

Book reviews are never objective. But even that in mind, this review is far from objective. This book.... This book was perfect. It was perfect for my soul. It was a book written for me. Written for me at this point in time, with my current interests and fixations and obsessions.

Could there have been more world building? Sure. Was the magic underutilised? Maybe. Was it straight up cheesy at many points? Think so.

And yet. This is the best book I ever read. Not in it's merit as a literary piece. But in what it did for me. This book felt like it was written for me, like the author looked into my mind and wrote what I always wanted to read. And maybe write.

But that's not a helpful review. This was fun. It was very well contextualised in the Wild West setting through descriptions to the dialogue. The banter was just perfection. The romance was done just right (I like slow burn). I loved the characters. The magic was interesting.

Pick this up if you want a soft weird west read that has strong characters and a good romance.

100/5 stars.

Well written with a nice flow. The dialogue and setting were great. The story was good with enough twists to hold interest without being convoluted. The marshal was a bit cliche, but not terribly so. Everything came together well.

Western isn't my usual genre. So glad I picked this one up. Also listened to the audiobook while reading on Kindle.

Note to friends: adult language, violence (yes, it's a gun-slinging-western)

Weird West, a hint of magic, dangerous romance. Reasonably good, just not as gripping as I hoped it to be.

I just finished reading this book today. I was intrigued by the cover calling it a 'weird western', and I was not disappointed. Although the existence and use of magic are really subtle in the story, I enjoyed how it was incorporated. I must admit that in my mind the main character, Marshal 'Apostle' Richardson looks and sounds like Timothy Oliphant. I definitely spent a few nights staying up later than I should have reading through some of the more exciting parts. If a sequal to this book is written I will happily read it.

Audio book review.

I enjoyed the characters and thought the story was interesting, but unfortunately it couldn't hold my attention for long periods. I would find my mind wandering, and I never really got emotionally attached to the characters. I do like the resolution, and I might go back and read this again in the future, as the setting is not something I typically see these days. Definitely a modern western. I really do appreciate how independent our main character is, especially because she's set up to be the morally corrupt antagonist. I love characters that end up morally gray and you are left determining for yourself how you feel about them. Would recommend if you like outlaw western bounty hunter stories with some good banter between the two main characters.
