Read for the Tarot Readathon

This isn't a bad book, it's just too mediocre and I didn't buy into the romance between Kylie and Hagen.

I did enjoy the small quips and banters between the two, even the pranks are quite funny.

It's very hard to think of a rating for this because it's not poorly written but it's not excellent as well. The pacing was so-so. And there were scenes that make me think it's not what happens in real life.

There were certain elements to the stories that didn't make a lot of sense, and somehow it felt forced into the story.

It was okay but as a romance, I didn't enjoy this at all. Maybe it's just not for me.

Neighbors and Prank Wars

Reader’s Notes:

– Kylie has a stalker/someone who breaks into her house

– Someone(s) are held at gun point towards the end of the book

(^ I figured these could be triggers for some people so I wanted to mention them)

Review:

I loved seeing the different sibling/family dynamics and antics. And of course the pranks Kylie and Hagen pull on each other.

Brief Synopsis: Kylie didn’t mean to start a prank war with her disgustingly good looking neighbor Hagen when she put a lock on her garbage can. She just wanted to show him he couldn’t sneak his garbage into her trash can. But a war has begun, and though she’s trying hard to hate the man across the street, the pranks are allowing her to see a different side of the guy she first met. Hagen wasn’t looking for a relationship when he moved to the suburbs, but this prank war with Kylie has been the most fun he’s had in a year. And when Kylie starts receiving weird notes, Hagen is all too willing to jump in and help her. He’s just being a good neighbor. That’s all it is….

This was my first Carina Taylor book and I absolutely adored it. This one was so much fun. I absolutely loved the whole prank war between Kylie and Hagen. The pranks had me cracking up. This is an enemies to friends to lovers and I loved every minute of it. I thought both main characters were phenomenal and u absolutely loved all of Kylie’s cousins. They were fantastic.

One aspect of this book I thought was interesting was how it highlighted the effects of toxic relationships on men. I feel like in a lot of romances (probably mainly due to the main characters being mostly women) that it’s the women who get gaslit and emotionally manipulated by their male partners. I don’t want to give too much away but Carina did a good job of showing how women can be just as manipulative and the lies they can have their male partners believe.

This book was so good and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

I have read several books where the main characters are in a prank war and I haven’t been a fan. It always felt childish and unnecessarily. I thought it was the pranks, just not my scene. This book proved me wrong. I absolutely LOVED this book, pranks and all.

Kylie: at first she made me nervous and this why...

“I was old-fashioned. I wanted love at first sight (mutually, of course). I wanted the man to sweep me off my feet (figuratively or literally was fine). I wanted him to be dazzled by my awesomeness (but be slightly more awesome than me, because I believed in marrying up).”

I was worried this was going to be an obstacle for her. The fact she didn’t fall into insta line with Hagen. I was happily wrong. Yes that’s what she originally wanted but as the story progresses she learns more about her parents marriage (her ideal relationship) and learns there’s much more that goes into a relationship. She was motivated, quirky, resilient and fun.

Hagen: his character was great. He comes from money but you never would have know. By the way he acts and treats others. He is the reason why the pranks didn’t bother me. Yes they were immature but they were fun and they fit these 2 characters so well. It wasn’t a competition for him and I think that’s what drew me to him. When she padlocked her trash can he thought it was hilarious.
“When she snapped open her blinds, she had looked so triumphant. I hadn’t wanted to laugh that hard in a long time.
Then, when she stepped out onto her porch to gloat, she made me feel as though an old part of me woke up. A part I thought was long gone. I didn’t want to ruin it when she had gone to so much work to frustrate me, so I made sure I scowled at her until I got back inside my house.”

I automatically liked him. From the first chapter with his perspective I knew he was going to be great. It just kept getting better and better with each chapter. I loved the connection these two characters forged. Without even meaning to they became friends and grew to care for each other. When Kylie faces a stalker who gets a little too close it gets even better. I loved how this author wrote. Even with the tension of the stalker the story was light and fun.
***SPOILER***
I will say the only thing that really threw me was the resolution with the stalker. I didn’t quite understand the scene in the stalkers apartment. Why the police let Hagen be shot at (by 3 bullets close range with non of them hitting him) and then get pulled into the apartment unarmed and not prepared to take on the stalker. That being said the rest of the book was just so good I didn’t really care. Even with that small confusion for me this book is a 5 ⭐️ need to read this again book!
I also LOVED all the crazy cousins and additional characters.
