This was so beautiful drawn, truly some incredibly detailed art. I loved the unique telling of fairytales, and how it paralleled with the characters. This is the shortest graphic novel I’ve read the conveys such heavy emotion, with deep complexities. It is quite beautiful all around. Also, don’t skip the notes about the writing at the end! It really emphasizes the deep detail and care the author and artist took to create this graphic novel.

this is a wonderful comic that deserves more recognition!! the art is simple and stunning, and the way different colours are used to tell different parts of the story is so so beautiful. the different threads of the story (the boy’s, his mom’s, and the fairy tales) are all woven together so perfectly, and everything is just a little different than you’d expect, but in a really nice way. though it’s a little sad at times, as a whole the book is so heartwarming. I think it does a great job as a YA showing/implying trauma and bigotry in a not-always-explicit and always-tactful way, while still having an emotional impact. 10/10, beautiful art, lovely story, all-around would highly recommend for YA readers and adults alike, esp those that may share identities with the main characters.

A beautiful read that I would highly recommend for tweens-young adults. I am 25 and I really enjoyed it

The way the various stories mesh and flow is really magical and interesting. I felt like I was floating around between different worlds. I especially enjoyed the element of Tién, and him finding acceptance from the people who love him. It warmed my heart.

Oh my god this was a GORGEOUS graphic novel, both artistically and story-wise. So tender and special. A story about family, and expressing yourself, and trying to understand each other across cultural lines and painful memories. Nguyen's linework and detail in each page is just incredible, I was totally in awe. I HIGHLY recommend it!
