Princess Donut is an icon, and I get the hype.

Fun, funny, brutal, and wierd--not like anything I've read before.  The audiobook was amazing, and while I don't love the moments focused on stats and inventory--they bore me IRL, too--I was hooked.

My first foray into LitRPG and I must say it was quite an enjoyable experience. Reminded me of Hunger Games plus Solo Leveling. It was action-packed with a lot going on from the get go. I really enjoyed both of our main characters, Carl and Donut. I love how smart and kind Carl can be and I kind of dig it when he got angry with those in power. Let's be real though— with how much he went through, he should be feeling more, in my opinion. His feelings were toned down and it sometimes did not feel realistic. (Sprinkles of humanity thrown in but I kind of wanted more). Some parts when they were exploring felt a bit draggy and too info-dumby but I kind of get that it was needed so that's okay, I guess. I feel like I need to continue on with the series because we were just getting into the politics of the game before that cliffhanger!

This is a fast, pulpy romp through a dungeon... Well, the first couple floors of a dungeon. If I turned off my critical thinking, this would have been a fun read. There were definitely moments of self-aware humor (a heads-up-display and arguments about the relative benefits of finite/infinite inventory systems).

However, most of the female characters are based on tropes that are too common in the gaming world – the cheating girlfriend, the demanding princess, the fat & gross hoarder, the oversexualized talk show host, the marketing chick who loves reality TV… there are few female characters who seem well-rounded or deep.

I found that the attempts at satire edged far too close to providing a platform for actual racist and misogynist talking points for my liking. It seemed like the author *might be* trying to use satire to point out that racism and misogyny are bad… but instead, just continued to normalize the existence of prejudice in the gaming community. I think gaming bros could read this book and come away feeling even more justified in their own misogyny and other problematic viewpoints.

All in all, the idea of the book was fun, but I am not planning to read the rest of the series.

I went into Dungeon Crawler Carl with incredibly high expectations. Not just because of its reception, but because – despite its crazy plot - it genuinely seemed up my street. I love video games and my sense of humour seemed well aligned with Dinniman's. I’m happy to say that Dungeon Crawler Carl lived up to them.

I thought the RPG-as-novel idea was so creative, and I enjoyed the way the achievements Carl and Donut received were communicated, as well as the use of video game mechanics throughout the novel.

Like so many others, I laughed out loud on multiple occasions. The quality of prose is far from what I’ve read recently (though by no means bad), but the sheer creativity and craziness of the twists (that never became so ludicrous as to disengage me, and that I felt were always consistent with the logic of the DCC universe) ensured the novel did not become boring. I think that if you go into the DCC series managing expectations in this way: you lean into the childish jokes, and you accept that the prose is not going to be full of life-altering literary devices, you will enjoy it just as I have so far!

Looking forward to getting my hands on book 2! I'm even considering getting the audio version to go with my hardback!
