It's been a minute since I've bothered to write a review but Ahren really sparked something. I am an avid reader of fantasy and while I truly enjoy the genre it's always nice to find someone doing something a little off the beaten path. Weitze's world building is subtle and a thing of beauty. While the young boy being shaped into something greater to save to world isn't an uncommon trope what sets Ahren apart is rest of the lore. The details are there throughout the story and it's a carefully woven tapestry that flows with the story. I can't wait to read the rest of this series!

Typical kid who ends up being one of The Chosen. Quite a bit of world-building towards the end which got complicated and tedious. All the conditions which had to be met for them to start defeating the bad guy seem to created so that there will be plenty of obstacles and lots of books could be written. I did like the characters, so may continue.

The good thing is that the important characters were introduced one at a time so were easy to remember. I mention this because I just started listening to a book which introduced about 6 characters in the first 15 minutes and I couldn't keep straight their names or defining characteristics so I'll read it instead of listening if I can find it at the library.
