Hannah Gadsby is my new hero. Their prose is so touching and hilarious at the same time, and they have a wonderfully relatable way of writing about their experiences. I wasn’t familiar with Hannah prior to reading this memoir, but I kept seeing it recommended by autistic afab adults- as soon as I finished reading I immediately went to Netflix to watch all their standup specials.

Bardzo trudno się to czyta, ale nie dlatego, że to zła książka, tylko dlatego, że to jakby wkładać palec w czyjąś otwartą ranę. W dodatku taką, którą sami mamy w sobie. Tough shit.

I have never cried nor laughed out loud so much while reading a single book. Beautifully encapsulates the horror, mundanity and joy experienced in life.

This is really well done and read by Hannah herself. It’s funny and interesting. But I just can’t get myself to listen to it. Maybe I need a different format. Or maybe I just don’t really like memoirs.

Audiobook. I like listening to memoirs so I can hear the author share their story directly. I find Gadsby’s delivery and style of humor and writing funny and engaging. Her memoir is well done and keeps a steady pace throughout. Mixing in info of events going on at the same time as her growing up helped provide context to the state of politics and views on sexuality in Australia, particularly Tasmania, while she was developing. Her journey to Nanette is intense at times but nothing is for shock-value and all is important and relevant in learning about Gadsby and how Nanette came to be. Audiobook includes short excerpts from her Nanette special as well
