I have all the time in the world for Hannah. Having grown up in the North West of Tasmania obly a few years behind her, reading her early biography felt a lot like a re-cap of the backdrop to my own childhood. She has been so generous in sharing her story to try to slap some sense into the world. I wish some parts of her story had never had to be. Humans can be shit sometimes.
It read like a long ad for her shows. If you want details and specifics, come see the show. I have no war with this woman’s success. I just am not a fan of bait and switch. This is not a memoir. It’s a piece of glossy marketing for her shows.

I loved listening to this book and Hannah describe her life, struggles and the way to Nanette. It was such a pure look at her experience mixed with humor, trauma and kindness.
3.5 I think. I listened to the audiobook version and I loved hearing Hannah tell her story. It didn’t quite hit home for me in the way that I anticipated but I still thought it was a really good read, and interesting and important to hear Hannah’s take on comedy and life as a minority in her field- a queer autistic, female comedian
Not even finished yet and I love it. I am dazzled by Hannah Gadsby and the only disappointing thing about this book so far is the admission that she is, in fact, married and there is no hope that I will someday run into her randomly and (through a series of strange happenings) become the love of her life and settle down in Australia to raise our dogs. The fact that I am not a lesbian has never once entered into this fantasy. Anyway, it's dashed and she is (by all accounts) very happy in her life situation and I am thrilled for her. Much better to be married to a lesbian, for sure.
Gosh, I love her. This is a smart, difficult, funny at times memoir (notice how I put funny last?) and I I loved learning more about her life and the process she used for her special, Nanette.
This is just for me. I didn't finish but would be up for finishing
If you like me have seen Nanette and absolutely loved it you might just be a bit queer or autistic or female or some mix there of and this is the book for you. It is a loving but heartbreaking read but paints a nuanced portrait of how it can be growing up as an outsider in your own community.
It contains most of the hard topics but if you have seen Nanette you know what’s coming.
