The first Curtis Sittenfeld book I've read--have heard great things about her writing, especially the Laura Bush-y book.
This book grew on me. I ended up liking the journey more than I thought I would at first, and feeling more and more comfortable with and intrigued by Sittenfeld's layers of detail and meaning.
Hannah makes readers uncomfortable, I'm sure, because she lives in her head. She made me uncomfortable--mostly because I saw myself in her, her fears and reticence and inability to relax and stop analyzing every transaction and relationship. When she finally risks handing over her heart it doesn't go so well, which makes the story very real. And many people don't like to read very real, messy stories with ambivalent, wandering plots.
Will definitely pick up another Sittenfeld novel.

It's like taking a stroll through someone's life before they've hit 30. Kept me reading just to see if the main character ever got it together.
The plot was fine, the characters were fine, the writing was fine. It was a quick, fast read, that I didn't mind when I was reading it, but the story is sort of forgettable.
Such a clear insightful voice.
I shouldn't like this book, but I do. Not much really happens--a young woman has relationship trouble, with men and family members, and grows up, a little. But the writing is so assured, the characters so real, the protagonists thoughts and feelings so vivid, I was along for the ride. Another really assured product by Curtis Sittenfeld.

I'm a fan of Curtis Sittenfeld but somewhere in the middle of this book I stopped reading and it took me awhile to pick it up again. Why? Because Hannah's life is not all roses and poetry. The title is more of a desire than a realization. But as I finished the book this week I decided that's what makes it such a great read. It's about Hannah's journey, not her destination.
Not awful, but not as good as Prep and nowhere NEAR as good as American Wife.
