I was a massive Twilight fan, books and films. They still have a place in my heart. I got Midnight Sun when it came out but did not read it. I have been making myself read the books on my TBR list and this came up. I’m so glad it did because I absolutely loved it. There are no surprises, it’s the same story as Twilight but from Edward’s perspective. The genius thing is that by having Edward’s POV, we also get amazing insights into nearly all the other characters as Edward reads their thoughts. This was my favourite aspect of the book. I love how vapid Jessica was and Mike and Tyler being obsessed with Bella. My other favourite part of this book is we get so much more dialogue between the characters; Bella was so much more interesting as she wasn’t just mooning over Edward. It was also much clearer how strongly Edward felt for Bella and how much she meant to him. I gave this four stars but it’s closer to four and a half. It was so easy to read and kept me hooked.
more a 3.5. somehow this book made me feel like i was a teen all over again... teen me would be shocked to find adult me reading a twilight book. parts of this book made me want the entire series from edward's perspective due to all the interesting factoids i hadn't known (the stuff about charlie's mind and seeing how alice processed the future) and the other part made me want this book to end quickly because it was too much at times because edward was truly an obsessive freak (clearly casted perfectly in robert pattinson). now only time will tell if it causes me to revisit the entire series as an adult.

I cannot imagine this would be enjoyable for anyone who didn't already have a nostalgic soft spot for Twilight. That being said, I really did like the first half, getting to see other characters back stories and what an absolute dweeb Edward is. Second half dragged, same as in Twilight.
I would give it a 2.5 if it wasn’t so problematic and disgusting.
Did I read this book in a free pdf version so that everyone’s favourite Mormon SMeyer doesn’t profit off of my surreptitious Twilight renaissance? Oh yes.
Is this book any good? Not really. I really get why I loved the original version at age 11, but I’ve also come to understand everyone’s genuine criticisms on the slight racist, sexist and pedophilic undertones.
Did I enjoy it nonetheless? Absolutely.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s go over some positive and negative points.
+ Cullen family interactions!!!! Family dynamics!!!
+ Emmett and Edward’s bond is everything I wished for and more.
+ Some unanswered questions finally answered.
+ More appreciation for Jasper. In the original books and movies, he was sort of a colourless character, but Midnight Sun finally showed us how indispensable he actually is in some key scenes.
+ Edward’s thoughts are unintentionally funny. Please SMeyer, let the man be horny. Let the man say fuck. Anyway, I’m glad she portrayed him as the overthinking emo virgin we’ve always known him to be.
+ Good excuse to revisit the Twilight soundtrack. Not as if I’d need one. Still slaps.
+ The detail of Charlie’s thoughts being slightly cloudy was a nice touch.
+ The release date couldn’t have been more perfect. A new Twilight book in this shitshow of a year that is 2020? Hell yeah.
- The mistreatment of Rosalie and Jessica. They’re not as shallow and mean as they’re portrayed in the books and I will die on this hill. Smeyer just hates women.
- Yes, Edward overthinks everything but god that gets boring really fast. It slows down the story tremendously and produced some of the worst lines of this whole book. (eg. “Like a stalker. An obsessed stalker. An obsessed vampire stalker.”)
- The pacing. Fewer thoughts and more actual interactions. The story only really takes off as soon as they meet James, Laurent and Victoria.
- The actual love story was pretty boring and sort of ridiculous. They’ve known each other for a few weeks and after a few intense chats Edward suddenly can’t live in a world without Bella? .... sure.
- Dear SMeyer, by now we’ve pretty much established that Bella is gay. Act like it.
To summarize, it’s an absolute must-read for (ex-)Twilight fans and other people, like me, who used to pretend that that was their only personality trait back in 2010.

Okay, so to say I have conflicting thoughts over this book is an understatement of the year.
This book managed to make some of the original problems in Twilight SO much worse while also giving us some really fantastic new moments.
As a former Twihard, this book made me want to break out the soundtrack and relive them good ole teenage days. If you're ready for the angst-fueled nostalgia, this one definitely was worth it.
Things I hated:
-The STALKING
-The unnecessary girl hate
-Making Mike a creep with his thoughts
-The rushed romance
-The Hades/Persephone retcon (this isn't a spoiler, the cover is literally a pomegranate)
Things I loved:
-Emmitt is the og himbo and we stan
-Carlise is too pure for this series
-More time with the Cullens overall
-Jasper's powers are WAY cooler than we previously thought
Things I'm neutral on:
-Bella kind of got a personality....?
-Rosalie being jealous of Bella because Edward chose her (we already knew about this, but watching it play out sucked)
-Edward really thinking his diamond form was scary
-More Edward vigilante days

Time to go dust off all my Twilight merch and plan a reread.
