Elevator Pitch: The narrator recounts a tragic murder which occurred despite several people being warned of it beforehand.

A short book (90 pages) will get a short review. This novella was riveting despite its intentional lack of suspense. The first sentence gets you quickly to a curious, "How did this happen?" and as the story progresses your reaction gradually changes to a horrified, "How did this happen?" The fact that so much is conveyed thematically in so short a volume is ludicrous; you really feel after it all that you've been given a complete picture of the community's soul, hypocrisies and all. Especially moving was the final scene between the prospective husband and wife. The capstone of it all, however, is in the very last pages when the event is finally described in its entirety. To learn after the fact (as I did) that the story is based on a real event from Gabriel Garcia Marquez's youth is astounding.

Márquez paints a raw and intense view of human nature, which left me in utter shock on the final page.

We stan a relatable queen ig

Simple yet magical! From the opening line to the last, I found myself completely immersed in this world!

magical realism murder mystery where you already know who the murderers are. it’s an interesting premise, but i don’t think márquez is at his best here, sadly. the style of the story is told reminiscent to how a police report would read, which leads to very fast and concrete knowledge in a genre usually unconcerned with objective facts and details. the murder when described is grisly and frankly kinda cool, but something about the story just felt off the entire time, i sadly wasn’t as enchanted as i have been in the past with this one. maybe a reread is in order, as it’s a pretty short novel.
