This is the kind of story to be digested in a single sitting. Marquez spins this murder mystery like a long form piece of investigative journalism that, despite the title’s obvious declaration, reaches a satisfying, shocking climax.

This is a story of failure. The people failed Santiago Nassar, and to some extent they failed the murderous twins as well.

Every character in this book seems fake. Not at all unrealistic, quite the opposite, the characters are fake bc of the parts they play. Each one is who they is, and do what they do confined by the roles society has deemed them to play. They are seemingly trapped, unwilling to go on and asking for someone to stop all the pretend without realizing that they could do so themselves.

All this effort to do as they are expected to, without looking at the big picture is very representative of latinoamerica which I suppose is one of the many things that Gabobo does well.

This is best shown near the end, when the people leave a wide berth between them and the damned but don't bother making an effort to stop the tragedy and preferring instead to watch as their people tear each other apart.

Society could be bettered by collective effort but we'd much rather stare passively at the damned and doomed.

This book was meh. I think I enjoyed analyzing it more than reading it.

Tak svítilo slunce, nebo bylo zamračeno?
Všechny postavy jsou vlastně dost marné;
vypravěč, samozvané detektivní očko, mnouzvaná vesnická drbna;
umrlec, který v konečném důsledku vlastně nehraje vůbec žádnou roli;
vrazi, kteří se profláknou všem ještě před činem;
vesničané, hříšní lidé světa Márquezského.
Ale funguje to.

“-Ni te molestes - le dijo Pedro Vicario-: de todos modos es como si ya estuviera muerto.”

Márquez is the Michael Jordan of storytelling you can’t change my mind

There are confusing parts of the book. They were Spanish speaking Arabs that were Catholic..you have to love the Caribbean islands. Beautiful writing, and the story will haunt me for years..

I struggled with 100 Years of Solitude so it was recommended I'd read this instead and I did like it more than 100 years of solitude. It's a quick read and interesting too.
