I was thinking about how to review this book - one that is so obviously kind and moralistic it's easy to criticize. But what can I say: I like floating in Saunders' wit and ethics.

Fox 8 reminds me of two quotes. One cited in a review of the book, from the author himself: "literature is a form of fondness-for-life. It is love for life taking verbal form." (Note to self: read said essay https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/my-writing-education-a-timeline)

The other one, older, heard enough times over the past decade to shape parts of my mind: "In this world, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant."

George Saunders is brilliant. Fox 8 is 49 small pages, and it will be one of the loveliest, funniest, saddest stories you will read. Upon finishing this I am sitting in my car crying, because this brief story reminds me of loss, hope, perseverance, cruelty and kindness. I am reminded what humanity means by a brilliant little fox.

"If you want your Storys to end happy, try being niser." 😭

i don’t give 5 stars for books unless they’re my favorites of all time, but i’m thinking about coming back to this one and changing it to 5 eventually. it was really, really good.

i loved it so much. so beautifully written. i read it for like 30 minutes but it’s affected me like i read it for hours. super well-done.

i was really surprised by how this story could be so short and still invoke such strong emotion. it’s beautifully written, especially because of its simple tone and spelling.

there’s a paragraph spanning pages 45-46 that resonates with me as a perfect way to describe feelings of distrust coming from trauma—distrust of those who caused it, of those who are capable of causing it, and a general distrust of everything good.

it’s only less than 50 pages. the words are big and there are illustrations. it won’t take long to read, so i highly suggest reading it if you can.

I wasn't expecting to get such strong feelings from a short book. Yumans, what is wrong with you?
