What a fantastically odd but enjoyable read!
The entire book is a series of letters written by Judy(Jerusha) to the mysterious benefactor who is paying for her college education. It reads like Ann of Green Gables meets Pippi Longstockings, lol.
Jerusha has spent all of her 17 years as a foundling in an orphanage. Even her name was given to her by the Orphanage. So you get to enjoy her witty and enthusiastic embracing of life as she spreads her wings at college, and so does her benefactor. All he asks in return for his help is that she write him once a month to let him know how things are going.
All she knows about him is that he is tall and thin as she saw him from a distance silhouetted in the headlights of a car. His shadow cast behind him like a daddy long legs.
He goes by the name of John Smith. As the reader all you know about him is what Judy knows, but you can guess more as time goes on.
I found the writing very engaging and I could really feel Jerusha turning into Judy.
As a side note, there is a movie with Fred Astaire made from the story. The charm of the book, is lost on the movie which is only loosely based on the book. Although the book never does say how old Jervis is , Fred Astaire is WaaaaY older than what I pictured (he's 56 when the movie was made).
But, it is only loosely based on the story. The choreography, however, is top notch with some pretty fantastic sets and costumes.

Cute story, but a little creepy at the same time. 😅 Also, I didn’t love how the author sprinkled her atheist and socialist views into the story.
"I have been walking and talking and having tea with a man. And with a very superior man - with Mr Jervis Pendleton of the House of Julia; her uncle, in short (in long, perhaps I ought to say; he’s as tall as you.)"
" Jervie dear, but it’s a happy kind of missing; we’ll be together soon. We belong to each other now really and truly, no make-believe. Doesn’t it seem queer for me to belong to someone at last? It seems very, very sweet. PS. This is the first love-letter I ever wrote. Isn’t it funny that I know how?"
