This book was a favorite of mine that I recently revisited. It is definitely a bit simple for adult readers but it remains a lighthearted “college girl” book. Low commitment but still interesting.

If you love shoujo anime, but want to try reading a classic, try this!
This is my comfort book.
It’s soooo cute. The man is a bit problematic (still fun romance imo) but It’s the college adventures, self-actualization, and female friendships for me!
- slice of life
- lovable underdog
- pretty dresses
- fun social drama that gets resolved in warm & fuzzy ways
- the picturesque backdrop of a New England college town
If you’ve got a tolerance for a little shoujo anime nonsense, this should be no more upsetting than that.
But if you have concerns about old-timey book romances and want to check if this one will upset you, here you go.
(Major spoilers, although it’s still interesting to read knowing the spoilers)
—Daddy Long-Legs is also the guy she ends up with. He’s not actually an old man, but there is an age gap. I think he’s late 20s-early 30s?
—— He also does some things that could certainly be interpreted as petty and controlling, with the added problem of him having financial leverage over her.
—— We don’t really hear or see his thought process, due to the format of the book, so it’s certainly up to interpretation how much we attribute to him just sucking, and how much we believe he’s truly convinced himself that he’s doing what’s best for her as her financial guy/reluctant mentor.
——We do know that he leverages his position as her sponsor to affect a few of her social/romantic decisions in the book.
—— It’s implied later that he has tremendous guilt for doing this, and make efforts to make amends.
—— But if you’re sensitive to age-gaps, power dynamics, or the mc unknowingly calling the love interest “daddy” for much of the book, perhaps skip this one
