I thought this book was really charming. Loved the heroine -- full of life and humor and stubbornness. Only thing that stopped me from giving it four stars was the ending, which left me feeling slightly creeped out because I found the guy to be manipulating.
A sweet, fun read. I'd seen the musical and the movie before reading this so I've been familiar with the story. People like to huff about the relationship, and call it grooming, or whatnot. I find those reviews a bit melodramatic; this isn't Lolita. The tale starts with goodwill that does gets entangled with a bit of deception / jealousy, and while Jervis certainly overstepped boundaries using his guardian role, Judy held her own, and eventually everything gets resolved honestly.
Judy took the reveal in stride; it seems like once the reveal happened it was so obvious to her it was hardly with holding a grudge about. She already loved them both and melding them together into one came easily.
My copy of this is a first 1912 edition that I found at an antique store for 20 dollars (!). It's in decent condition with only one page unattached (but still in the right place).

This is a sweet little story. I read it in a few hours. On one hand you could find it a little creepy how involved her "daddy" is in her outside-college life but I couldn't help but still love it. So sweet and full of cuteness as you see Judy growing up.
I love this book. Such a classic. Its a quick read, so I reread it all the time (at least once this year) So I'm including it in my 2016 reading challenge because Goodreads doesn't let you include multiple dates for a book.
2019- some books just come to me. Appear I my life. I’m talking old, copies of books that are meant to be mine. This was one. Visiting Brattle book shop on my Boston trip, and found this old vintage edition! It’s a beauty! I love Judy. This is better than dear enemy. Such a classic.

'Daddy-Long-Legs' is a surprisingly original children's novel about an orphan who is allowed to go to college, supported by an anonymous benefactor. Apart from the opening chapter the whole novel consists of letters by Jerusha 'Judy' Abbott to her trustee, whom she calls Daddy-Long-Legs after having caught a short glimpse of his slender body. This trustee character remains unknown, but we learn to know Judy as a free spirit, a strong-willed, anti-dogmatic and surprisingly independent woman.
Of course, the whole premise of the book is rather questionable: the anonymous trustee supports Judy if she writes him letters, but he never answers them himself,, but Judy herself is such a lovely and modern character that one is willing to forgive this fundamental flaw.
With charmingly naive illustrations, convincingly supposed to be Judy's, by the author herself.

yet he enters her life secretly nonetheless. Worse, in the end of the book there's a great risk that Judy's free spirit will be ensnared into marriage, after allWith charmingly naive illustrations, convincingly supposed to be Judy's, by the author herself.
“Anybody can rise to a crisis and face a crushing tragedy with courage, but to meet the petty hazards of the day with a laugh—I really think that requires spirit.”
A reread was in order once I found out about the second book and it held up!! I have a soft spot for headstrong girls from centuries past… and the romance always has me giggling and kicking my legs lol
