Onto the second volume! Foreshadowing:
Spoiler
- I'm just gonna quote "The Rumbling": all I wanted to do was save your life, I never wanted to grab a knife
- in the flashback Mikasa has a weird transformation after Eren tells her to fight
- Reiner is adamant in trying to help the weird titan fight off the other titans that are eating it, and Annie backs him up
- when Eren comes out of the titan there's a shot of Reiner and Bertholdt looking shocked, or maybe worried?

AYOOOOO this is so good actually what even

Upon reading the first two volumes back-to-back, I've decided to give myself some time before diving into the next installments. I enjoyed this one better than the first, as it has a bit more depth. Mikasa's backstory is heart-wrenching, showing a fierce woman ready to fight for justice and her slowly dwindling family and community. She'll kill to save, an ever-present theme thus far. Meanwhile, the Titans are still at war with humanity until one anomaly starts attacking its own kind. This felt too easy of a solution, but because the traits of the Titans are still largely unknown, I'll forgive author Isayama for now. Onto new reading...

Instantly better than the first volume, in part due to fleshing out the characters a bit more. Whilst the art still isn't great there seems to be a lot less visual noise littering the pages in this one and in some places the panel beats are used to much greater dramatic effect. There's enough curiosity about what is actually going on that if I owned volume 3 I would immediately continue. Sadly, I haven't enjoyed it enough to want to buy any more, so unless someone lends them to me I will never find out. Either way is fine by me.
