I received this book as a part of the Voracious Readers book club.

I was really excited about this book when I read the description. I work in the mental health field, so I was interested to see how this author depicted depression and all the crazy emotions of high school. I think for me, it did a good job of showing how dark life can be for someone suffering from depression.

Overall, the structure of the book was hard to follow. I think with the changing perspectives, it took me a while to follow, and I found myself trying to figure out the relationship between the characters rather than the plot as I read. I think this was intentional to help show the confusion associated with mental health issues, but it still made it somewhat challenging.

I also think this did not give an accurate depiction of what high school is like. I'm sure some kids are getting drunk at a very young age, but I don't know who would believe a fake ID that some 15 or 16 year old would present.

Despite all this, I did "enjoy" this book. I say "enjoy" because it is quite dark. I think it could be a good read for someone trying to understand someone's experience. It gives a perspective of the person suffering, and I think it could help friends and family of the depressed understand. I wouldn't recommend this book for everyone, but I think for a lot of people this could be a very emotionally educational read.

I was given this ARC from Voracious Readers for an honest review.
TRIGGER WARNING ** This novel deals with depression, suicide, mental and physical abuse as well as rape. If any of these are a trigger for you, please do not read this book.

This novel was really good. I felt like I knew Amy and everything she was going through. I could feel her pain and all I wanted to do was help her.

There are to different storylines that come together in the end. You do not know that until you start reading a chapter about a party. Once you figured out there are 2 stories it becomes easy to figure out which you are reading.

The second story is about a couple, how they met, fell in love, got married and the the bad stuff in between. You really start to despise the husband.

This novel was a harrowing tale about the bad parts of life, and what it is like when all the good is taken from you. It is a very good read.

I was so excited to read this book, but 22 Scars let me down. Amy is a teenage girl who battles depression and often feels that killing herself would be better for everyone. Thankfully, her only friend, Beth, saves her life just by being there. After tragedy strikes, Amy is trying her best to cope with her new life. This book could have been so good, but in my opinion, it missed the mark. I did enjoy the subplot, more than Amy’s story, and I wish that story was written instead. I felt that the characters were developed well; however, none of them were likable. That being said, I did like that you were able to how the past affects the future and people’s actions, perceptions, and behaviors. This book was hard to finish. I could not wait for it to end, so that I could read something new. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this book.

This book was so well written and just utterly heartbreaking. It was such an emotional journey that broached many difficult subjects.

So 22 scars was a novel I was very excited to read, and I did find myself engrossed and more understanding towards young adults and their life experiences. We follow Amy going through a series of harrowing experiences and having very little (if any) support. Numerous teachers, friends and even her parents can tell there is something wrong, but dont seem to want to help, which is so heart breaking and upsetting but also very eye opening.
I really liked the writing style of the book, and loved Amy's friendships with Julia and Beth which I found so loyal, caring, loving and real, and felt like they were truly the people that could help Amy.
However I feel there are more things about the book that niggled at me such as the stereotypical opinion that if someone likes wearing black and listening to rock music that makes them a freak? And also the fact that you never hear the names of Amy's parents, they are always referred to as "The Mother" and "The Father" which was a bit annoying but was probably like that to show Amy's detachment from them.
I did like Amy's diary towards the end of the book but I found myself screaming and begging that someone would find it, but the ending itself did annoy me.
Despite the fact that the novel reminded me of 13 reasons why, it was good, and it definitely is a good read, even if it is harrowing in places.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read and review 22 Scars

⚠Trigger Warning: this novel includes rape, depression, self-harm, attempts of suicide, mental and physical abuse.

This is a novel mainly deals with some very serious issues sensitively. It was a cautious and engaging read.

I really wanted to like this book. As it is I have a lot of mixed emotions after finishing it. I wish the diary entries were mixed in a bit more. I feel they added so much to Amy's story that would have helped the reader connect with her earlier. The mom mentions Julia at one point during a fight with the dad and you have no clue who she is until Erics chapter close to the end. I think depression, self harm, and suicide are such important topics, I wish they would have gotten into that a bit more, and maybe covered more in terms of getting help. Or just more about what Amy was thinking and or feeling rather then just continually saying she was depressed. I know one cant always pinpoint what is causing their depression, but maybe some conversation around the helplessness aspect of it would have helped.

Amy's father was a horrible person, that much was clear, however, her mom was just as bad by continuing to let him come back and for not sticking up for Amy. When your child has tried to kill themselves you do whatever you have to do to get them the help they need. She infuriated me by not standing up to him more, especially after what he had put her through.

I did feel things were a bit disjointed throughout the story. It ended up all making sense later but at the time of reading it seemed random and all over the place. Even at the end I still feel there were some chapters that weren't necessary.

I was given an advanced copy of this book in return of an honest review.

⚠️Trigger warning: includes scenes of rape, self harm, abuse, depression, suicide, attempted suicide, and is very descriptive and can be hard to read⚠️

I did not enjoy this book at all, not because of the sensitive content but it just wasn’t me it felt as though there were two different people writing and they couldn’t totally decide what way to go with it.

22 Scars is the heart wrenching story of the daily struggle of living with depression. It portrays the life of 17-year-old Amy’s struggles through life and the emotions she deals with on a daily basis. This books is told through key events in Amy’s life and the lives of her parents that shapes the way Amy and her parents are.
The book as two story lines, which is kind of confusing, until the connection is made later in the book.
The detached style of writing took a while to get used to, but added an extra layer to get a real feel of how Amy sees life. It is written in a way that you are left feeling as confused as Amy is about life.
