I had a good time, it’s the ending that through me off. First, I wish that we had more time for the friendship with Ellie and the side characters and that there was more scheming (??? That’s not the right word) with her and Andrew. Like I wish we saw them hang out more and more of their fake relationship, but my biggest problem is the ending.

1. I don’t understand  why Jack was mad at Ellie and why she had to apologize?? At first Jack was mad Ellie got fake engaged w/ her brother for money and that kinda pissed me off because who is Jack to judge someone for caring about money?? Jack is doing a poverty cosplay but she still has resources to fall back on, Ellie literally has nothing!!

2. Then she’s mad that Ellie “didn’t believe in her” and idek how she came to that conclusion.

3. And it’s also somehow Ellie’s fault that she left last Christmas but JACK is the one who lied (by omission) about having a wife!! I wouldn’t stay to listen to anything you had to say cuz if you lied about that how would I believe that you’re telling the truth about you’re “getting a divorce” (literally the oldest trick in the book)

4. Ellie also somehow made Jack sleep with her even tho she thought Ellie was engaged to her brother?? Like how is your lack of self control anyone else’s fault but your own

For some reason, it took me so long to get into this book! I LOVED The Charm Offensive, so I was hopeful going into this one. It just didn't hit for me the way Alison's first book did. And that's okay! Not every book is meant for every person.

I will say that after finishing it and sitting with it for a while, I do see how fun and cute it was. It's a great holiday read and maybe starting it in June was just not the right call!

"You're not getting it," I say impatiently, plainly. "I'm in love with every single thing about you, Jack Kim-Prescott."

a christmas romcom! i loved reading about ellie and jack falling in love and the instant spark they had, but it didn’t captivate me as much as i wished. i hoped to get a little bit more of ellie and andrew and while i appreciate that they became friends in the end, i wish i saw more of their relationship and maybe more of their hijinks because fake dating when you’re in love with different people?? wild! in general, im not a fan of infidelity and while this isn’t true cheating, it has elements of it and the angst it creates is not entirely my cup of tea.

however, the fixation on failure and what each character goes through in their fear of it and how they work around it really does it home. combined with the cozy feeling of the holiday season, it makes this book a wonderful read.

Ugh my heart. I really enjoyed this read. The anxiety rep was so good (in my opinion), the therapy aspects at the end I enjoyed, the familial relationships of the Kim-Prescotts I enjoyed, the details, the story snippets, the air stream, and the bakery. I think my biggest meh thing about this book is that I didn’t necessarily vibe with the two main characters at times? And I didn’t feel their connection as well as I have for other romance books. But overall I liked the story, the growth, and the delicious christmassy queerness of it all.

Adorably sweet, this book follows Ellie as she attempts to work through all the fears she has that keep her from truly living. The characters are lovable and interesting, especially the grandmothers. This book would make a fantastic movie so I really need Netflix to get on it, like yesterday.

It's okay. Not an easy fun read! I almost didn't finish this book tbh. The pace was too slow for me.

The dialogue was hard to get through for me. I do appreciate the not so perfect relationship dynamics and mental health representation, but the MC was a bit whiney and insufferable at times. Didn't love the "half moon smile" and Swiftie references every other chapter. Overall okay. Wouldn't read again.

Like Last Christmas by Wham!, but add some wild family dynamics and a relatable main character (and lots of Taylor Swift references).

It's not The Charm Offensive, but it's also not trying to be, so that's okay. I really liked it!!
