Book two made me cry even more than book one. I believe these characters will have a place in my heart forever. The gentle and real queer love and joy is palpable. The ‘fuck-the-system’ narrative is much stronger in this second book. It’s more tumultuous than the first and I think this was the right choice. I was worried I wouldn’t get to see what I wanted to happen before the end and then the epilogue brought it in beautifully. Cozy and warm and hopeful and gorgeous.

The book is a cute sequel to the first novel and provides more story to a lovely cast of characters. I found the plot a little slow and some of the quirky scenes with the children I feel like had been rehashed from the previous book. The audio book reader when he does emotionally charged scenes i really didn't like the sound of his voice. However, the message of the book is important now more than ever but also a bit heavy handed.  I also appreciate the acknowledgement of working with social workers and psychologists about the trauma of adoption even when children go to nice homes such as Arthur and Linus.

A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one.

He's the master of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there.

Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department In Charge of Magical Youth. And there's the island's sprite, Zoe Chapelwhite, and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children.

But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve.

And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name that Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they're at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

I'll admit I was absolutely shocked when T.J. Klune announced Somewhere Beyond the Sea, the sequel to the much beloved House in the Cerulean Sea. I honestly didn't think it needed a follow up, yet I was definitely curious. My curiosity made it an easy add to my TBR and landed on my 2024 most anticipated releases list.

This follow up is Arthur's story and at times really read like a long monologue, which often took me out of the story itself. I'll admit is was like coming home to be back on Marsyas Island and I still absolutely loved all the characters. However, I felt like there was too much backtracking to the previous book and lots of things felt the same as in the first book. Additionally, I thought the narrative lagged as it veered into the preachy lane.

Yes it had the same whimsical and happy tone, yet sadly for me, Somewhere Beyond the Sea felt entirely unnecessary. The book isn't bad it just isn't the same and didn't feel as refreshing as I would have wanted it too. Maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe it just didn't need to be written. It was worth the read, but could also easily be read as a standalone without reading book one.

I enjoyed this book and love TJ Klune, but I don’t think it was his best book. Maybe what’s beyond the sea was best left to the imagination after the first book, but maybe it was all worth it for chapters 12 & 13 and to spend more time with characters I love. The plot felt like the same plot from the first book but with a different ending and from the point of view of the islanders instead of the inspector. I don’t know how I feel about the ending, but this is still one of my favorite books.

It is funny and inspiring and I love the characters. The characters are so diverse and insightful. There’s love and strength in their togetherness. It’s a lovely story that reflects a lot of problems in society.
