Of course she's an excellent writer. I felt like I had a very good image of each character. Overall I didn't care for most of the stories. The repeated theme of the lead woman trying to overcome her station in life with some dignity, though relevant, got old for me.

Each story in this book is beautifully constructed. Munro's characters are so real and fully fleshed out, even when we only meet them for a few days of their lives. She takes common tropes and twists them, leaving endings often unsatisfying but resonant.

These stories chillingly bring home the gigantic scale of personal tragedies that seem small to the outsider. Poignant and heartbreaking.

This was my first foray into short stories and I'm glad I started with Alice Munro. It was slow going at first because I wasn't used to this style of storytelling, and all of them ended with me wanting a bit more. More detail, more happenings, more explanation, etc. After I got into the swing of things, though, I started appreciating the way she really makes you exist in that particular moment. I might not fully understand what came before and have only an inkling of what could come after, but I very fully experienced the moment she was writing about at the time.

First London-based street acquisition. Good mojo.

Alice Munro - you can't just read her once. You've got to read her again, and again, and again.

Her stories written about women and men who live lives like you and I - quietly going about their days, wondering if they missed out on that great big love, or that great big chance; arguing with their children, or their parents, or both; pretending that life is grand, pretending that life isn't pointless.

She writes lush, beautiful tales which are long and enjoyable to read. I'm reading her again, soon.

Thought that the first story “Runaway” was absolutely brilliant. Sadly all the stories that followed disappointed me slightly.

Every one of these stories was well written and interesting. Even knowing that each would end with a twist I could never guess how. Solid.

Honestly bored shitless by it. Didn’t see the brilliance that was spoken about in the reviews. Nearly couldn’t finish it. Some nice descriptions and thought out situations but just not my kind of book.
