Have you ever felt like a book was made for you? This was what I felt reading this book. It was a very refreshing ya romance book that also gave light to some important topics like sexism especially in STEM. I really enjoyed the whole book and I was so happy about the representation in this book being filipino and a woman in stem myself. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who’s looking for a light romance read with great plot.

I received a copy of My Mechanical Romance via NetGalley to read and review.

The story revolves around high schoolers Bel and Teo. Bel transferred to the school and meets Teo when she is coerced to try out for the robotics team by a physics teacher. Initially they do not get along but start building a bot together and the relationship changes.

The characters are witty and smart and are written how I would imagine teenagers to be. This is a very tame romcom which I’m fine with since this takes place in high school. I also like that the author addresses how boys are treated much different than girls in STEM and the fact that boys are often encouraged to do STEM where that’s not usually the case for girls.

This is a great quick read that I do recommend.

omgg this was so good like i was just looking for something to pass the time in a barnes and nobles and i was like "oh the bob book let me get a head start on it" AND I HAD TO LEAVE MIDWAY BUT I WAS SO INVESTED i went back the next day

I wholly enjoyed listen to the audiobook version of ‘My Mechanical Romance’, it was so sweet, wholesome and the perfect YA read. The author has written it so well, from the intriguing robotics aspect of the plot to the character development, every minute of it was enjoyed.

Both do the characters were full of personality, and I loved their chemistry. Teo holds the world on his shoulders; feelings the pressure and expectations from everyone around him to perform at his best all the time. It’s a lot for him and he sometimes feels as if he can’t breathe. I could fully relate to this side of his character. Bel was the fresh air he needed; she helped him learn to let go. I enjoyed her character too; full of energy and compassion, yet she’s also struggling with her parents divorce as well as trying to figure out what she wants for her own future. Her journey was an empowering one as we watch her grow. She was told to take up space in the world and I loved watching as she learned to do exactly that.

The supporting character from Jamie, Dash and even Ms. Voss all added an essence to the story. I also appreciated Neelam’s character as she’s shown to have her own struggles. He character highlights the very real reality that women in STEM face everyday—through showing the mistreatment they face and how they’re constantly underestimated. I found this to be a great addition to the book.

Overall, a really fun and great read that I’d recommend to anyone looking for a cute YA book that talks about robots.

This is a cheesy romcom if ever there was one. But I have a feeling that my HS junior who wants to major in engineering will love it.
