First book in a very promising new series. Timely and interesting.

So I’m in a bit of a quandary here. I actually liked a lot of this story, but I didn’t like what is essentially the core: the mystery. The cultural elements and insights are fantastic, the women in police force portrayal is sadly accurate, and the social justice commentary is spot on, if a little overly overt. It’s just the mystery I am having trouble with, but when the book is billed as a mystery, that’s a slight problem. Alas, I did discuss in my book club today and they did concur, so I probably will not be finishing it, despite being half way through…but that’s still 6 hours (really 4 with my speed) of listening, and life is too short for books you don’t want to finish. May that be the lesson of the day!

A very twisty story, with a lot of little corners and turns in it that made me think this was a sequel (it wasn’t). There was something odd about the way certain aspects of the story were dropped in - told not shown - as opposed to the bulk of the book, that were insightful and additive but felt… over-edited? It was a great story, with phenomenal religious elements, but just a few odd story adds.
