A dark re-imagining of Snow White, Triquetra is a short story that explores what life is like for the heroine after her marriage to the prince who isn't as charming as she once found him as a child. I loved the atmosphere of this story, and although it covers some very dark topics, I was glad that--in my opinion--there was no more detail regarding it than necessary to tell the story. I found the dynamic between Fairest and her Stepmother interesting and tense, and the description of the mirror and scenes regarding it and magic were done so well, as well as the build-up of Fairest's paranoia and anxieties over her and her daughter's safety in the castle. To keep this spoiler-free, I will simply say that I did appreciate that the ending was not as grim as the rest of the story.
Triquetra is available for free on Tor.com with the option to purchase it, which is a huge bonus in my book. Also features a beautiful cover.

A dark, dark story about Snow White as an adult with a less than happy marriage, a precious child, and an ominous locked room with a magical mirror inside.

The older I get, the more I relate to the witch rather than the princess in fairy tales.

I normally love reimaginings of fairy tales, especially when they hew closer to the dark originals and not the Disneyfied versions, but I merely liked this one.

Hauntingly dark and beautiful, weaving magic, terror, and love together in a lovely coda to the original tale of Snow White. After ever after stories can be difficult to pin down well, but McDermott does a good job of anchoring the story in very realistic feelings despite the fantastical trappings. It's a story we all know in one way or another (like most good fairytales) but still appreciate when told well. I've read a handful of TOR's online short stories today & this is by far my favorite. Very recommended for Grimm fairytale fans, women finding their power, & those that wonder what might happen next.
