I have wanted to read Rick since I first read George a few years ago, so I am pretty disappointed with this book. The writing is highly forced and inaccurate to what middle schoolers are really like. The story felt preachy, and the characters from George (Rick, Melissa, Jeff, and Kelly) really disappointed me because of how their characters were portrayed. In George, the characters felt real and acted in a realistic way. But in Rick, they were always presenting and teaching a message with their dialogue instead of being a character in the book and naturally part of the messages Gino wanted to send.

I read this for the Read Harder challenge. I really enjoyed Melissa by this author and this book was excellent too. Thanks to my friend Amy from Kit Society for suggesting it. This book is the story of Rick who is going into middle school and wondering about himself and his identity. He has a supportive mom who says he can be attracted to boys or girls and a loving and surprisingly understanding grandpa though his dad keeps asking him about hot girls. His best friend Jeff is a bully who makes derogatory comments about LGBTQ kids in the Rainbow Spectrum club Rick joins without telling him. Being in this group leads Rick to ask questions about where he fits in, and his thoughts and journey of self discovery provides a great lesson for middle school readers who might have similar questions. I wish the book had been longer, which would have allowed more character development of Rick’s family members, but it was still a good read and I’d recommend it to Middle Schoolers.
