i enjoyed Alaska as a character, but i feel like the story was a bit 'white saviory' in that the main character takes personal responsibility for someone elses daughter and expects that he knows best?

It's been a long time since I had been able to read a book for myself and not for class or anything. I had heard of John Green before by a friend who loved his 'Paper Town' novel when she read it months ago. Then, when another friend of mine let me borrow her copy of 'Looking For Alaska', I thought it would be a good reading to relearn how to read for myself and not for others.
I have to admit: at first, I wasn't convinced at all. I mean, of course I had read this type of books before but it didn't feel good or look interesting. I even thought about not finishing it for a while but I thought I would give it a shot.
But after having read it, I must apologize. I found it absolutely beautiful, magnificently sad. I happened to recognize myself in all of these characters even though they were so different from each other. I this I I needed this novel to understand myself and the world more. It has a lot of great theories about life that could enlighten yours, and I'd advice anyone who has the opportunity to read it to do so.
It has changed me in a way I wouldn't have thought it would, and even though I read it thanks to a friend, I'll buy my own copy and will read it again soon. Probably one of my favorite books now.
