superhero story with no hero. just villains and worse villains (very simply put). you get powers by
having a near-death experience
and the main characters, Victor and Eli
were best friends in college who decided to test this theory, killing themselves and gaining powers
then they become enemies and the story starts there

This is one of those understated five-stars. And I don't know how to explain that other than that I cannot pick out why this book was amazing except for the fact that it was. The story structure, jumping between present and past and relative past and shifting limited third-person POV, was brilliantly done. Schwab's writing is so easy to delve into, and her characters were hard--whenever you find yourself endeared to them you wonder if you should be. At first, I was worried that most of the book would be spent figuring out the nuances of becoming an EO, but the plot is pretty quick once the characters get going and the alternating timeline chapters allow for exploration of events to be touched on later in the book instead of info-dumping them in the beginning. Victor and Eli are such complex characters that you can feel like you both understand and are being held at arms' length from. Can't wait to read the sequel!

I think it's very well written, and I binged it in a day... but very dark hence the 4.5 stars from me. Simply the feeling left after reading it is sad... or empty In a way. But the plot is awesome the whole time I was wondering what next. It's refreshing to have a "villain" character even psychopath be a character we root for.
