I received this book as an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
The History of Bees is the story of three generations of beekeepers: William in 1852 England; George in 2007 Ohio; and Tao in 2098 Sichuan. The story and experience of each character is quite different, yet with similarities, and fundamentally intertwined as the fate of bees change over the centuries. In the UK, the bee is certainly beloved so I was fascinated by having this as a thread running through each story. I found all of the characters interesting and what each of them endures was rather touching. The book does jump from each different character and era, so I found myself wanting to continue on the path of that particular character before quickly becoming absorbed in the current focus; this shows well-written characters, and effective implementation of this technique (which doesn't always pay off but it did here!). I did guess some plot-turns but it didn't detract from them. I definitely enjoyed it and would recommend it to others who don't mind the story jumping between time periods (I appreciate not everyone does).

William är fascinerad av insekter och vill forska, men anser sig ha misslyckats fatalt med detta. Han tar sig numera inte ens ur sängen. George är biodlare och helt inställt på att hans son ska ta över familjeföretaget en dag. Sonen verkar inte lika införstådd med detta. Tao oroar sig för sin son och arbetar som pollinerare i ett framtida Kina där inga bin finns att se så långt ögat når. De är alla tre en del av binas historia.
Det var länge sedan jag läste en bok med huvudpersoner som fick mig att gnissla tänder så mycket som William och George. Detta är inte kritik mot boken i sig. Den enda anledningen till att jag inte flög genom den här boken är att jag haft alldeles för mycket att göra på jobbet. Nej, William och George drev mig till vansinne helt enligt planerna. William är helt besatt av att hans son och mentor ska respektera honom medan han samtidigt högljutt dömer sin fru, sina döttrar och grannar som värdelösa trots att det är en av hans döttrar som delar hans forskningsintresse. George har många tankar och idéer om hur hans son bör leva sitt liv och har väldigt svårt att kommunicera dessa, till en punkt då jag bara ville skaka honom och skrika "PRATA UT!" Tao hade jag mer sympati med, även om hon också försökte leva genom sitt barn, men varför är ett rätt stort avslöjande om vad som händer henne, så jag håller tyst om det.
En välskriven och väldigt mänsklig historia som fick mig att åter igen oroa mig mycket för hur det går med alla insekter i världen...
