I’m writing this review about 3 months after I finished listening... oops.
Very well written and deserving of its fame. It’s odd to me that the first of the Hannibal books takes place after Hannibal is already locked up. His perspectives are interesting of course, but his own crimes are still in the shadows.

solid start to the series, not as good as The Silence of the Lambs but Worlds better than Hannibal. If you’re interested in the series, I would say just read Silence of the Lambs, maybe this one too but Hannibal just isn’t worth it. Jodie Foster wouldn’t do the movie for a reason

While sometimes awkwardly paced, Red Dragon manages to keep my attention. Right from the start when we meet the unsettling protagonist Will Graham, even a person like me who barely ever reads crime fiction is interested; why is this person like this? What on earth happened? The twitchy, nervous man forms an odd sort of a professional bond with the most notorious man of them all; Hannibal himself has always served better as a side character, a shadow looming from around the corner and under the bed, ready to grab an innocent's ankle. The two men share the most interesting scenes of this book: the conversations, the darkness under Will Graham's skin and the beast under Hannibal's who sees all. Red Dragon-dude himself wasn't a massively interesting antagonist but he works and he's extremely unsettling. Used to a more experimental writing style, Harris' language seems outright clumsy at times but not so much it would disturb me from reading.

Also: someone give poor Will Graham a hug.
Also: someone applaud Harris for the "I hope you're not too ugly"-line because I'm still laughing at it eight years later (since the first time I read this book.)
