Loved this book. So much so that it even made me react very emotionally to what was being presented. I think that this Alex Benedict series is my favorite Sci Fi series of all time. Characters were great, what is really curious is that at one point I did not care about where the bad people have gone. You don't have to finish all the story lines for a book to be good, but it has to get reasonably close to a resolution. I think this is a book that talks about humanity and our need to go to war with each other, our need to destroy, but not all are the same, we have those who have evolved so much so that they want to help others and make life better for all. This is a great book, looking forward to more of the same author.

Welp, honeymoon over with this series. Starts off as good as ever, then all of sudden for the last quarter morphs into intergalactic inter species ambassadors averting a war, aw shucks did we really do that? Yes, you did and it was stupid.

Jack McDevitt again demonstrates why he is one of my favorite current sci-fi authors. The Devil's Eye is another Chase Kolpath/Alex Benedict novel, which blends science fiction, Indiana Jones style xeno-archeology, and who-dunnit mystery into a delightful end result. If you aren't reading Jack McDevitt yet, you owe it to yourself to fix that right now.

Another solid three and a half stars. If you like the mystery-scifi combo maybe it's a four. Ending was a bit too pat for me, but with the build up, I'm not sure how it could have been anything else.

Another page-turning Alex Benedict novel to devour in a couple days. This time, the opening theme is set with a trip to ancient, ruined Atlantis before Alex and Chase head off to dig up another secret. This is more a whodunnit than an adventure in my mind, but still great fun.

A minor note about Chase in this book: It was long ago established that Chase is young and cool and beautiful, but I found that the occasional toplessness stood out compared to the other books and seemed a bit gratuitous. I'm not a prude or anything like that. I don't mind her having a different boyfriend each book or hooking up with someone once in a while. After all, people look for romance. And people certainly have a right to be topless on a topless beach or by their private pool, but the way it was introduced and then mentioned again, (not to mention toplessness in the face of menace later in the book) just seemed a little out of place, and not written in as well as it should have been.

Still and all, a decent from Jack McDevitt, but not the strongest in the series.

There's not much in the way of antiquities in this book. There is a mystery to solve, but I was shocked when it was solved and I was only halfway through the book. The rest of the story is politics, even though most of that is in the background while spaceships fly around. This wasn't as good as other books in the series. I want more antiquities and less politics.

This book started off very interesting, but then the last 3rd of the book went in a different and unexpected direction. I liked the ending even better than the first part of the book. It was engaging and satisfying.

This book has the race of aliens known as "Mutes" so it would be helpful to read the prior book(s) where they were introduced first (A Talent for War and more specifically Seeker).
