This was uses a sweet story of a child and her father spending time together, skiing through the woods in the winter, discussing where all the animals go during the cold season. He refers to it as a "secret kingdom" under the snow, which is a pretty fabulous description. We may not be able to see what the animals are doing, but Messner shows us that through clues, we can discover a lot.

The flow of the text is perfectly paced and the softness of the illustrations, combined with the subtly of information makes this a really nice bedtime read. Teachers, don't worry, you're kids won't fall asleep if you read it in class, however it makes a nice one-on-one read as well. I really loved it!

A small section in the back expands on each of the animals and their wintry habits.

By the author and illustrator of the incredibly beautiful Over and Under the Pond, this book is also beautiful and full of creatures and critters, although instead of a pond, these live over and under the snow.

The illustrations are great, and the words are lovely.

As with Over and Under the Pond, there is a section in the back of the book that provides more information about the creatures in the book.

Recommended, and would make an excellent gift book, or giving tree book.

So nice to think about all aspects of the world and how they intersect -- and these books are particularly good at including all the senses as they portray the visible and hidden worlds.

This is a children’s book. A father and child go skiing into the forest and it tells the tale of all the woodland creatures’ activities both above and under the snow. I felt that it was slow and went on for too long.
