What if superheroes sucked?

Villainous is Stonie William’s first graphic novel and is also the first in the Villainous series. Published in May 2021, it has received mixed reviews leaning towards negativity, despite the popularity of the following comics in the series.

Despite being aimed at the teenage/young adult audience, this comic is better suited for younger children. It deals with many clichés and stereotypes that make it dull and difficult for older readers to get through.

A breath of fresh air into superhero comics! A fantastic mix between Justice League and X-Men with a main character that I for one, felt an attachment towards. She was a junior hero that aspired to be everything her personal hero was, or so she thought…

My first steps into a Mad Cave Studios story was a joyous one. I loved the setting, the theming and the style of writing. Stonie Williams has served up a delectable buffet or twists, turns, mystery, emotion and conflict. Testament to his writing was my hatred for the villain, love for the ‘goodies’ and my ‘just one more page’ attitude when reading.

Superb art from Jeferson Sadzinski compliments Stonies’ writing brilliantly, I especially enjoyed the way a characters facial expressions pop with a degree of over exaggeration, it really was a shock at first as I haven’t really encountered this style before but i soon got used to and loved forward to seeing it again.

If you're looking for an alternative to the ‘big 2’ superhero comics then you don’t have to look any further than this gem. Villainous will provide sustenance to any appetite for good ol’ fashioned good vs evil stories. I am extremely happy to have come across this comic, I look forward to potential future continuations of Tilly’s villain story.

“Tilly, one of the newest super-powered people to join the Coalition of Heroes, is doing her best to navigate the dizzying world of superheroes. Working with her idols should be a dream come true, but when she learns the truth, Tilly's dream quickly becomes a nightmare. Now, Tilly has to make a choice - Get in line and stand with her heroes, or take a stand and risk becoming something more... Villainous.” This was a quick and easy read. Unfortunately, I felt like the plot was very generic and all of the characters were bland.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

What if the superheroes you always looked up to, were actually the villains of the story?

Villainous is a fun and quick superhero comic. The characters were well fleshed out and the story was simple and easy to follow. I loved our main character, Tilly. She wasn't your usual 'superhero' she was nervous, caring and her main goal was to protect those around her. Not your typical sassy, strong and overbearing superhero which I enjoyed. Tilly also has some amazing character growth.
I enjoyed our side characters and hope to learn more about them if we get more volumes. I'm excited to see where this story goes, if this series continues.
The artwork and colouring was amazing and fit the tone of the story perfectly.
If you're looking for a quick 'BOOM', 'POW', 'CRASH' Superhero comic with a twist, I definitely recommend Villainous as your next read.

I received an e-copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Not all “heroes” are good, not all “villains” are bad. This was a fairly quick read. A good portion of this graphic novel was just introducing characters. Some of the bolded words were a little bit confusing... the majority were characters names, others were emphasized words, and the rest seemed at random. The art style was nice and one thing I loved was that not all of it was “pretty” (i.e not everyone looks good sitting down and this illustrator showed that). This was a start in the right direction, hopefully future volumes improve.

A huge thank you to this book’s publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this book early in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this eARC in exchange for a honest review.

'Villainous' is a graphic novel about Matilda, or Tilly as people call her. She is a reptilian and a superhero. We follow her when she is going to start a new job, with the rolemodels that she's had since she was a child, called the coalition of heroes. But she starts ro realize that her heroes arent so innocent....

I likes this book! at first it was kind off predictable but i really liked how fast things escalated! Other than that I wished to have more of Tilly's backstory like who is she? and the other characters, who are they? hopefully that will be discussed in other novels. The reason i gave this 3/5 star is because i simply felt that it wasnt really there for me to rate it 4/5 stars.

I think that people who like morally grey heroes and the book ' renegades ' by marissa meyer will like this one, since its a very quick read and it wasnt boring.

I was reading this in public when I came to the part where Americans are trying to frame Russians for murder of some British ambasador.

I started laughing so hard that I think people are sure I'm mad. I just couldn't get over this Die Hard bullshit!

A decent twist on superheroes and supervillains, but I wasn't as keen on Sadzinski's artwork or Williams' trope-y writing (including the cursory worldbuilding).

Wasn't as thrilling as I was expecting but still a good, quick graphic novel read. I'm always down for more villains.

This was an engaging if slightly derivative graphic novel. The story of “Villanous” is not unlike many stories that we see now. The hero that’s not a hero, and the anti-heroes we root for. It reminded me very much of “The Boys” television series but without the humor. The story is interesting, and the artwork fits it well. I wish I got to see the characters develop rather than getting brief synopses of each. I would have loved to have seen more about how our Villains got to where they were. Their “origin stories” as it were. There was so much more potential for Two-Spirit and December, but character development felt like an after-thought. That being said it was straight-forward and enjoyable and I would recommend it to any of my students for something with action that could get them engaged.
