Brutal, difficult and disturbing material. I really enjoyed the structure of this story, which switches back and forth from conventional first person narrative, to podcast, relating the events that were precipitated by the death of a thirteen-year old girl and the disappearance of her nineteen-year old sister, Sadie. The reasons for Sadie's disappearance are slowly revealed as we follow Sadie cross-country in her search for her drug addict mother's former boyfriend. The podcast picks up some time after Sadie leaves home, and slowly retraces her route, interviewing the people Sadie interacted with, and getting a picture of Sadie's motives, drive. Sadie's sections give us her overwhelming grief, love and sense of responsibility for her younger sister Mattie. We're gradually told of Sadie's own pain and fury over what was done to her and how nothing can stop her from finding the former boyfriend. It's interesting also getting various strangers' impressions of Sadie through the podcast as she follows the trail.
The story is raw and brilliantly told, and all too familiar, in some ways. What Courtney Summers does with the structure of her story, the emotions she captures, and the quality of the writing, elevate this story from interesting to riveting.

Amazing and upsetting and unsettling all wrapped into one. I will recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I hope there is a second book that tells the rest of Sadie's side of the story, but I can be okay if there never is, because at least they found out what she did and why she did it.

okay so i loved the formatting of this book. the pov changes from sadie to the podcast, the slight delay so we know some things before the pod, it was done so well i almost couldn’t put it down.
also !! listening to the audiobook was really fun for the podcast chapters

Incredible, powerful, disturbing story. The ending really doesn’t bring you any comfort or peace, but a story like this never can. It was very well written, and I couldn’t put it down. Using a full cast for the audiobook and adding a few sound effects took the already eerie and unsettling story and made it absolutely haunting.
Such a hard hitting topic written in an amazing way! A little slow in the first chapter or two but after that it becomes truly gripping
3.5 stars rounded down. I enjoyed this book and all the layers of detail that went into the production of the audio version. I may have rated this higher if I had read this at a different time, but due to the holidays it took me a while to get through and I wasn't super invested in the story (which could be because I had too high of expectations given what I had heard about this audio book). However I would love to read more audio books in this style!
