A fun read, not as good as the previous one but an enjoyable case. Also an early Maigret as the title suggests focusing on the case that gets Maigret a promotion to the Police Judiciere.

Maigret's first case. I haven't read any Maigret for decades. Nor am I usually a fan of detective novels, but Maigret is unique. This book is set in Paris in the early 20th century and you feel as if you're walking along the city streets as you read. The plot revolves around the corrupt and bizarre 'goings on' in Paris high society. Not sure it's a great plot, but it doesn't really matter. This entertaining book marks the start of Maigret's spectacular career at Quai des Orfèvres.

We get a peak into Maigret's first case as a newly wed man, unsure abut being a police, and determined to solve this mystery that so many people believe he can't. Continental European (detective) books are far more descriptive of food and drink which is rather fun too.

Questa prima indagine di Maigret non mi ha convinto completamente. Soprattutto la conclusione è stata, a dir poco, deludente.

Come dice il titolo questo romanzo ci presenta la prima indagine di Maigret, molto prima che diventasse commissario di polizia. Infatti torniamo indietro nel tempo (esattamente nell'aprile del 1913), quando il giovane poliziotto (aveva ventisei anni) svolge la funzione di segretario al commissariato del quartiere Saint-Georges. Maigret era sposato da soli cinque mesi (ed è ancora magro).
Che dire, leggere questa prima indagine di Maigret è stato piacevole, si intravede il suo metodo di indagine (cioè quello di osservare la psicologia dei vari personaggi della vicenda), il suo primo appostamento che dura ore, la sua immancabile pipa che accende e fuma, le sue buone mangiate (il finale mi ha ricordato il commissario Montalbano quando pranza nel suo ristorante di pesce preferito in riva al mare), ma soprattutto colpisce l'onestà e l'innocenza che ha il futuro commissario tanto è vero che arriverà quasi a volersi licenziare. Maigret non è dalla parte dei buoni o dei cattivi, ma è sempre dalla parte dell'umanità, quella verace.

Fun and quick mystery! I really like the detective and am looking forward to his other cases. I loved the Parisian setting.
