Ich hab mir diesen Sammelband gekauft, nachdem ich die AVGN-Folge zu Spawn-Spielen und einen ziemlich genialen Fanfilm auf Youtube gesehen habe. Fand die Hintergrundstory ansprechend (ich steh ja auf tragische Edgelords und Spawn bedient das schamlos^^). Lustigerweise stellte sich im Verlauf des Buches heraus, dass dieser Comicheld total up my alley ist! Spätestens die Gaststory von Neil Gaiman hatte mich gewonnen. Außerdem haben mich einige Aussagen des Autors über sein Konzept sehr angesprochen - ein Held ohne künstlich gesetzte Grenzen - Spawn schnetzelt seine Gegner brutal weg, wenn ihm danach ist, statt sie etwa brav der Polizei abzuliefern. Und er hat wirklich die abgefahrensten Superkräfte, die er allerdings nur unzuverlässig beherrscht und zudem ja nur begrenzt einsetzen kann, so dass es trotzdem nicht langweilig wird. Dafür wird es phasenweise umso alberner. Spätestens beim Zigarre rauchenden Erdferkel hatte ich nen Lachmuskelkater. Der Comic nimmt sich bei aller "edgyness" (mit dem Helden könnteste nen Dreitagebart rasieren) dennoch selbst nicht allzu ernst.
Dass der zweite Band noch nicht hier liegt, hat seine Ursache lediglich darin, dass sie ihn heute im Comicladen nicht mehr auf Lager hatten.

Maaaaan this book is so 90's. And not in a good way.
I feel like I can't judge this book without reading more but judging it on the first 12 issues alone: it's violent, has a good mystery going that feels like it'll take forever to unravel, and is quite immature at times.
Maybe it was just the style of the 90's but I feel like a lot of the stylistic choices in this comic haven't aged very well. I'm not talking about "Egads Captain America, the big palooka is attacking those dames" type deals, which this comic is full of, it's everything else too.
I think because I'm not as divorced from the 90's as I am from older comics, I can't look at this and say "its old but it still holds up". I think this is old and it shows, a lot.
Artistically, it's beautiful sometimes and too much of a caricature at other times.
I'm planning on picking up Book 2 because it features legends and favourites of mine, Morrison and Moore, writing an issue apiece. If the story hasn't hooked me by then most probably I will not be reading the rest of this series.

*-I read this book as an older Spawn paperback containing Spawn #s 1-5, and then single issues of Spawn #s 6-12.

Well, I kind of like it?
The stories didn't really have a connection between them beyond Spawn trying to get his memories back. Other than that, it just felt like a weekly episode of something that doesn't connect back. I liked some of the stories but in order to get to know everything in the beginning, I always prefer a connecting arc in the beginning. We'll see how this goes on in the next parts.
The art. Some I liked, some was a bit too over exaggerated (the muscles!) for my tastes.
We'll see how the next parts will be. :)
