It's fascinating to read the writings of someone who lived 2,000 years ago and realize that - wow, being a human hasn't changed all that much. We suffer the same doubts, anxieties, fears and ask ourselves the same questions. Although there was a lot of irony for me over the fact that one of his main points was basically 'Your life is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things, so don't worry so much, everyone will forget you pretty quickly' and yet here I am reading his writings, knowing his name 2,000 years later. So actually - yes, you can make a pretty long-lasting impact.

I was kind of hoping for something mind-blowing in terms of ways to think about life that might be useful, but I guess I've already been exposed enough to the main concepts of Stoicism that there was nothing in here that was 'oh whoa, yes!' moment.

I wasn't expecting the super overtly sexist stuff. The amount of times he says stuff basically to the effect of 'womens brains are simple, and not capable of this kind of thought' - it seemed to me that he was throwing that kind of stuff in WAY more often than just a casual remark. Anyway, different times and all that. I get that - but just worth noting.
