Four totally different short stories. Each a pleasure to read. Very good.

I listened to the audiobook. I only liked the first part that was read by the female.

Didn't realize it was short stories at first, but once I figured that out it was enjoyable.

Comprised of four short works, one of which I'd read before, this collection by Russo is a solid work and, for me, a welcome return to form. After being unable to enjoy "Everybody's Fool," let alone plod through the first few chapters, I feared the Pulitzer Prize winning writer's best days might have been left behind along a rust rimmed New England town.
"Horseman" and "Intervention" both sparkle. I raced through each and wanted neither to end, their characters engagingly flawed and deliciously vibrant.
Enjoy.

I felt betrayed by my favorite author when I discovered that two of the four stories in this book have previously been published (and read previously by me). At the same time the two remaining stories showcased Russo's ability to bring characters to life on the page.

3/5 Bit of a mixed bag here. Out of four, the first and third stories are worth the price of the book. The second overstays its welcome by about 40-50 pages. And the last story I DNF'd. So, take from that what you will.

One of my favorite things about short stories collections is that you can skip around and read them in any order that speaks to you. I did that with this work, starting with the stories I thought I would like the most, and surprisingly continuing through the stories I thought I might not read at all, on first glance. It's hard not to read this collection with a small amount of awe for Russo's chops as an author. Characters are given surprising depth, swiftly and efficiently. The third story, Intervention, was by far my favorite and stayed with me long after completing it.
