I fell in love with this book. Excellent characters; an incredible style, wispy and poetic; a dark irony I've only ever found in great Native American writing. Pick it up.

Enjoyed this book but suspect I am not going to be an Erdich fangirl. Nice change of pace; lineage fiction is fun.

What an absolutely stunning book--a  masterpiece in a career full of them. This was Erdrich's first novel but her voice is already so distinctive and so fully developed that it draws the reader in instantly. Her prose has that effortlessly readable quality that only comes with a great deal of craft and is layered in a way that rewards rereading. (I last read this ten years ago and was surprised to find how much of it had stayed with me upon rereading.) The book is beautiful and tragic and kaleidoscopic, a rich tapestry of characters, scenes, and stories that fit together elegantly. A modern classic.

Astonished at Erdrich's ability to give each character, and there are many, their own voice. All of the mixed feelings it means to be part of a family.

Beautifully written. Had a hard time keeping track of the characters, but overall enjoyed this.
