Another solid installment to this series, with at least one very "Awwwwww" moment when Eve and Roarke express their gratitude to each other for providing each other emotional support and encouraging each other to be better people. I wish that more books with romances, whatever their genre/subgenre, portrayed more of this type of love, not just eye-rolling instalove and infatuation agony before the HEA.

It has a slower start than some of the other books in the series. There is a bit of Roarke's pov in this one, and his interactions with Summerset without Eve. It was nice, since we don't see this often. So, it has a bit of a different beginning. I thought this book would be okay.

But it's falling flat. I'm not as interested in this case or these characters as I was in previous In Death books. Maybe it's because it's not as outrageous as some of Eve's other cases, those with snipers, teams of killers, cases related to the recurring cast, or a big mystery. I also didn't like Rochelle much. I do feel sorry that her brother died, but her attitude doesn't make it easy to like her.

There are a few interesting and funny parts of the book, and some interesting random one-off characters, but it's not enough to keep me engaged.

I eventually did finish the book. The final bit with the complete takedown of two gangs and the ensuing interviews afterwards were more interesting.

I enjoyed the characters, as always. The way Eve takes her job so personally makes her so special and great - and it really shines through when the victim is someone who had been part of the Banger Gang and, after getting arrested and serving time, had managed to turn his life around.

There was a lack of tension and mystery that I usually really enjoy in these books, though. I just was never really anxious and there was little struggle to figure things out. Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy watching her snag the bad guys - that was great.

Overall I enjoyed this one, just not as much as I'm accustomed to with these books. Still can't wait for the next one!

Another solid entry in this series. What looks like a simple death by overdose leads to murderous infighting within and between two inner city gangs.

Always love these books. They are totally my “guilty pleasure” when it comes to reading.

More like 4 1/2 a little drawn out at the end but other than that a really good book. Already have the next one pre-ordered.

Nora Roberts as J.D. Robb does it again. It took me about a day to read this one between work and other distractions, but it was definitely a good one. I know I stayed up later than I should have on a work night to finish it! The percentage mark was taunting me, being in the 90% range. I kept thinking, "Only a few more chapters, I can do this!" Before I knew it, it was going on midnight. For some perspective, I usually try to be in bed and asleep by 10:30PM, 11PM by the absolute latest on work nights. That 5:45AM wake up call comes quicker than you'd believe.

That being said, I feel like this book was shorter than the others, but maybe I just read it FASTER. Who knows? I enjoyed it either way!

This book brings our usual host of characters, plus some who haven't visited us in a while. Most notably is Crack, who in turn introduces us to a new character who will become the part of the focus of this installment.

Without going into too many spoilery details, I loved the cooperation found within this book. Between homicide, the gang division, the drug division. To an extent, even the FBI, although we see very little of their role. My favorite moment in the book was after all the major action took place and Eve was holding a debriefing before interviews, where everyone thought Roarke sent in the food, not Eve. With each person who kept asking if it was Roarke or where he was, I kept expecting Eve's eye to twitch or her to literally, physically kick someone... Even her commander.

I think we as readers and a society can learn a lot from these characters and how Robb portrayed them. Even teenagers are capable of murder, rape, theft, and other unspeakable acts. Repeat your own bullshit to yourself for long enough and even you will start to believe it. Even if you love someone, they don't always have your best interests at heart. You will never fully and truly know what goes on in someone else's mind.
