Out of all the Moomins books I've read, I understood this one the least. It does feature bits of Moomin lore I was familiar with, but the rest perplexed me deeply. I feel as though I haven't finished the book at all, but here I am on the last page, and Tove Jansson's tiny picture is staring back at me.

A weird one. There's revenge, jailbreak, theater, adoption. We get to see more of Snufkin beyond the usual silent, mysterious presence. We get to see other people being hospitable to the moomins. It's exciting.
